The first railway of Nepal was Nepal Government Railway(NGR). It was Amlekhganj-Raxual Narrow gauge rail line. This was approximately 39 km long. The main purpose of this train was to bring wood and other herbal products from Nepal to British India.
At that period there were no means of Transportation development was happen in Nepal. People used to come by foot to Amlekhganj(Bara) from Kathmandu via Bhimphedi(Makwanpur). From Amlekhganj they used to board the train and going to different parts of British India for different work.
The Second Railway of Nepal was Janakpur-Jaynagar Railway(NJJR).
The Janakpur Railway(Nepal railway), built in Rana period by the then British ruler to transport wood and other valuable things from the Mahottari forest in 1994 BS. The locomotive was running from coal and firewood.This was operating 52 km from Bijulpura in Mahottari to Jayanagar in India.
The route was as follows
- Deuri Parbha halt
- Sahid saroj nagar Rly. Station
- Mahinathpur Railway Station
- Khajuri halt
- Inarwa Railway Station
- Jaynagar jn.
The railway was placed under the Nepal Transport Corporation in 2021 BS with the objective of managing it. In 2025 BS, the government decided to name it Janakpur-Jayanagar Railway. Tech Jung Thapa was appointed as the first manager of the railways.
Till 2001 A.D. The train was operating form Bilapura to Jayanagar via Janakpurdham. After Washout of two bridges in 2001 flood the 22 km track was closed.
Due to this incidence, the remaining 29 km railway track between janakpurdham to Jayanagar was operating. There were daily 3 services were being taken place. To convert from narrow gauge to broad gauge The train was closed from January 2071 BS. After a long wait of six years, two sets of passenger train and four sets of locomotives were brought to Janakpurdham.
